Gaj kesari Yoga – A Perspective

Gaj kesari Yoga – A Perspective

Before commencing the article, I would like to bow down to god and express my humble gratitude to my Jyotish Guru Shri Alok Khandelwal.
Gaj kesari yoga is one of the important yogas in Vedic Jyotish and is an interesting one to study and understand. It also has a wider mention across multiple astrological texts. Let’s try and understand the different perspectives of this popular yoga.

Gaj-kesari – What’s In A Name?

Gaj Kesari has an interesting signification behind its name. Gaj is haathi (elephant) and Kesari is sher (lion) and both elephant and lion are the major powers in a jungle, hence this is one of the supreme yogas in Vedic astrology. There is another view that one lion can overpower multiple elephants and hence the native having this yoga demonstrates a similar power. Whichever way one looks at this yoga, both the lion and the elephant are well-respected forces in the jungle for their boldness, being courageous, for their dignity and these are the same results that a native having a strong GajKesari yoga gets.

How is this yoga formed?

This yoga is formed in its purest sense when from Lagna or Chandra if Guru is in Kendra and there is no malefic influence and none of the planets are debilitated, combust or in enemy sign. So when our mind (which is the Moon), is in kendras with the karaka of Gyan Guru (Jupiter), then what resides in the mind gets converted to wisdom due to the blessings of Guru.

Gaj Kesari doesn’t always imply more money, but it is about comfort in life, whatever the native is doing in life, it is about giving power to the same – it is like the majestic walk of a carefree elephant, like living your life fearlessly.
This yoga manifests in Jupiter or Moon Dasha.

Is This Yoga Common?

Moon, which is a fast-moving planet, takes about 28 days to move around all 12 signs or rashis. This implies that Moon stays in one sign for approx. 2.33 days. During its journey, Jupiter may be in Kendra to Moon 4 times during this duration of approx. 28 days which implies 4 x 2.33 days = approx. 9.32 days out of 28 days which is 1/3 rd (33%) of the time. This means that 33% of people or 1 in every 3 people will have Moon in Kendras from Jupiter.

Now add to this the number of times Jupiter will be in Kendra from Lagna (ascendant) – this implies that this yoga should ideally be present in the horoscopes of a lot of people. But does this also imply that will this yoga give supreme results in all such horoscopes? No – that is not the case, let’s understand why?

Conditions For This Yoga To Give Full Results

Apart from Jupiter being in Kendra from Moon or Lagna, there are a set of conditions that need to be filled for this yoga to give better results:

  • Jupiter shouldn’t be in 6,8, 12 houses or with their lords
  • Jupiter shouldn’t be combust or associated with malefic. Research also tells us that the lordship of Jupiter also shouldn’t be bad, so Jupiter shouldn’t ideally be functionally malefic for a chart.
  • Moon shouldn’t be weak or associated with malefic.
  • Strength of the yoga also depends on the Rashi in which the yoga is forming.
  • Also depends on which particular Kendra is Jupiter placed from Moon – hence depending on the Kendra (1-4-7-10), the results will vary.
  • Exaltation or debilitation or strength of Jupiter and Moon will also have an impact on the results
What Do The Ancient Texts Say About This Yoga

Below is an excerpt from some of the ancient texts about this yoga. Do note that this is not exhaustive but a summary of some of the excerpts mentioned in some of the texts:

• Jupiter not debilitated, not combust or in enemy sign and Kendra from Lagna or Moon and be conjunct or aspected by another benefic.

• Native wealthy, intelligent, endowed with virtues, loved by the king.

Examples of This Yoga

Two renowned astrologers are known to have this powerful yoga in their horoscopes.
The first one is Dr. B.V.Raman

Natal Chart

A glance at this horoscope tells us that Jupiter and exalted Moon are in Kendra from each other and the Lagna. The disposition of Jupiter, 10th lord Mars is in Kendra and aspecting Jupiter and making the karmsthan very strong. Hence we can find a very strong Gajkesari yoga forming in this chart.

Another notable example is the chart f Shri K.N. Rao who is again a renowned astrologer.

Rashi Natal Chart

Shri K.N. Rao has exalted Jupiter and Moon in Kendra. The 10th lord Moon with Lagna lord Venus is in Lagna. Again we can see there is a strong GajKesari yoga forming here as well. While both these charts have a lot of other strong positive combinations, however for discussion of GajKesari yoga, we will limit ourselves to these points only.

Hence we see that GajKesari yoga is a very popular and strong yoga and subject to the different conditions being met, this yoga can provide a lot of positive results to the native having this yoga in its purest form.
