सम्पूज्यमानं सततं मुनीन्द्रैः।
सुरासुरैर्यक्षमहोरगाद्यैः
केदारमीशं शिवमेकमीडे॥

Simple meaning:
I deeply respect Lord Shiva, who sits peacefully near the snowy great Himalaya, worshipped all the time by rishis, gods, demons, yakshas, and even giant snakes.

Why Kedarnath is So Special

Kedarnath Mandir is situated in Uttarakhand, in Rudraprayag district, right inside the beautiful Himalayas. This is not just a temple, but one of the 12 main Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.

Here, every stone, every drop of river water, feels spiritual. The Mandakini river flows nearby, and the mountain air is very fresh. The history says that rishis and gods have done hard tapas (meditation) here from endless time.

The Story of Kedarnath Jyotirlinga

Long ago, Lord Nar and Narayan (forms of Lord Vishnu) did strict penance here. They made a lingam out of soil and started worshipping Lord Shiva with full heart. Lord Shiva became so happy that he appeared as a Jyotirlinga, agreeing to stay here forever and bless all his devotees.

Later, after the big war in Mahabharata, the Pandavas came here, feeling sad and looking for forgiveness for their actions. Lord Shiva wanted to test them, so he became a bull and disappeared into the ground. The Pandavas struggled, but Bhim held the tail, and Lord Shiva showed his divine form as the Jyotirlinga.

That’s why, in Panch Kedar tradition:

  • Kedarnath: represents the bull’s back

  • Tungnath, Rudranath, Madmaheshwar, Kalpeshwar: different parts

Temple Details, Rituals and Timings

  • Temple height: 11,780 feet above sea level

  • The Jyotirlinga here looks like the back of a bull

  • Pilgrims do parikrama (walk around) to show respect

Inside the temple, morning abhishek (pouring water), Rudrabhishek, special poojas, Aarti, Pandava and Bhairav puja, Shiv Sahasranama chanting happen regularly.

In winter, when heavy snowfall comes, the main idol is shifted to Ukhimath, and pooja happens there.
