Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas: Why the Three Gunas Are Important?

Gunas

The philosophy of Yoga that comes from Samkhya Yoga says that Prakriti is made up of three main qualities. They are the Sattva Guna, which stands for light, happiness, and goodness; the Rajo or Rajas Guna, which stands for passion and movement; and the Tamas Guna, which stands for darkness and stillness. There are three Vritti that go with these three Gunas of mind.

  • Santa Vritti, peace, is a Sattva guna balance.
  • Ghora Vritti denotes rage (rajas guna).
  • Mudha Vritti is from Tamo guna and signifies sloth and drowsiness.

Why Tamas Guna is Important

Tamas is the attribute of being lazy, unmotivated, or uninterested. It is the least important of the three Gunas. Tamas is the model for inertia or not wanting to do something. In Sanskrit, it has also been interpreted as “indifference.” Because of Tamo or Tamas guna, you are dull and don’t know much.

Individuals with tamas guna don’t have much of an urge to be creative and stick to what they know. Even when tamas is at its worst, sattvic and rajasic parts of it can lift the conscience toward spirituality.

Why Rajas Guna is Important

Rajo or Rajas Guna drags you into Samsara. With Rajas Guna, his mind gets restless, which forces him to stop being lazy and get to work. This is the opposite of what Sattva Guna is thought to do, which is to make the mind calm and do nothing.

The intellect of Rajo Guna desires fresh pleasures, sensations, and variety. For example, it might be like a new location, person, or thing, but the next moment it might hate them. It needs to be with people and talk, which are the only things that can take your mind off of things. With this kind of mind, it’s hard to find peace.

Sattva Guna prevents the mind from considering others’ happiness as its own. In other words, there is no happiness inside, and there is no compassion for others because it doesn’t care about them.

With Rajas Guna, the mind separates the different things and says that everything is one. The sun, moon, sky, language, husband, wife, friends, matter, energy, cosmos, truth, and Brahman are one. “Ekameva Advitiyam Brahma” (The Brahman is unique and has no equal.)

With a lot of Raja, one can take a turn toward Sattvic. For example, the gangster Ratnakar turned into the wise man Valmiki, and the people who threw rocks at Lord Gouranga, Jagai, and Madhai, have become his first disciples.

Why Sattva Guna is Important

Sattva Guna is about being clean and bright. It is a very important part of getting to Moksha. It gives the person Daivi Sampat virtues, such as not being afraid, having a pure heart, and other things, which can set them free. Sattva Guna’s main consequence is Brahmavichara, the search for truth, differentiating between Sat and Asat and reality and illusion.

Happiness and peace don’t come from the outside. It comes from the inside and is made by the same psyche when it is under control and the thoughts are going in the right direction. To get pleasure from doing things, you as an individual need to think about how much you like, want and are good at them. When you develop the Sattva Guna, everything will calm down and your thoughts will stop.

So, to find the Sattvic mind, you need to do some Japam, Vichara, Satsang, contemplation, Tapasya, and Svadhyaya from time to time.

Anyone who wants to find happiness in the world of things will never really hear the voice of Atman. There is no true thought or Vichara in which he asks about the Self. Pure intellect, which is also called Sattvic Buddhi, is shown by pure thought.

Everything comes and goes from our minds, which are full of thoughts. Those who practice Niskama Karma Yoga can think about God and meditate.

The mind’s attractiveness is that it’s curious and asks many questions about the world. And it can deceive everyone. When it comes to being used, it can’t do anything. If you’re willing to focus and put it into practice, you must hunger for God’s darshan or Self-realization for months before you can think from the Sattvic Buddhi.

Sadhanas are meant to give you a strong, pure will. You can make your determined will stronger and pave the way to God-realization because it can bring about avidya nivritta (revolvement of ignorance) and paramananda-prapti (the awakening of bliss) (Sat-chit-Ananda state).

On this planet, there are few Sattvic individuals. They are the ones who have things like patience, kindness, forgiveness, and so on. The real person who wants to find the Sattvic mind is looking for all the Sattvic qualities.

Sattva Guna fills the mind with steadiness and inner joy. It can also help keep a friendship going strong, and in the long run, you won’t mind eating simple food.

When your mind is full of pure Sattva guna, you also get closer to the Divine source. This is because your mind is clean. At this point, you’re inspired and have pure thought (Bhava-Samsuddhi) and heart (Sattva-Samsuddhi). This is Jnana’s fourth stage, which is also called Jnana Bhumika.
